Why have I been referred to a nephrologist?
Your doctor is worried about your kidney function. Even though you may be feeling fine, your abnormal blood test results indicate that you may have an issue with your kidneys. Nephrologists specialize in kidney care and your doctor wants to make sure that an expert evaluates your condition.
Why do I need to go to the lab before my appointment?
The doctor will be able to determine how well your kidneys are functioning by looking at the results of your blood and urine tests. The blood test will measure your kidneys’ ability to remove the blood toxins. A 24-hour urine collection may also be used to evaluate how much protein is in your urine. The doctor cannot treat your kidneys until he or she knows how well your kidneys are functioning.
Why do I need to bring my medication list to each visit?
The doctor may need to adjust your medications based on your evaluation. He or she will need to consider all the medications you are taking before prescribing a new medication or instructing you to stop taking a medication.
